File:Ira Aldridge as Aaron in Titus Andronicus.jpg

edit

I understand why you were tempted to do it - but engravings and paper are naturally "warm" in colours, and greyscale makes it look unnaturally "cold". This image is up for Featured Picture, and really does need to have natural colours for that.

Basically, while converting to greyscale works really well for black and white pictures, it's not really appropriate for engravings, lithographs, and the like, which are printed on paper - those who know such media will find they look rather odd in greyscale. Adam Cuerden (talk) 05:11, 11 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

OK, I understand, that certainly sounds logical -- to best emulate the "feel" of the real life medium. I was just on a spree of palette reductions, and certainly don't mind if anyone reverts. LobStoR (talk) 09:46, 11 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
I skimmed them, and the vast majority are clear improvements. It's just really the non-photographic stuff to watch for. Adam Cuerden (talk) 16:49, 11 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi,

Why did you degrade this image File:Monticello church damages 1974 Super Outbreak.jpg from 24 to 8 bits ? This make it looks grainy. Pierre cb (talk) 17:54, 12 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

The original file was already grainy, I don't think that it is any worse after my greyscale conversion. However, if you think it looked better before, then go ahead and revert it -- I certainly won't take it personally. Cheers! LobStoR (talk) 17:58, 12 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
I must say that it is true after inspection. Just curious to know why the conversion, apart from slightly reducing the byte size ? Pierre cb (talk) 18:10, 12 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
For consistency, so that any particular black and white photo has some degree of consistency with any other black and white photo. Also, like you said, there is that slightly reduced filesize :-) LobStoR (talk) 18:17, 12 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Where is the documentation on "AdvComp," I don't want any loss of data on this image... — raeky (talk | edits) 00:33, 14 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

My optimizations were still lossless, the displayed bitmap is still 100% pixel-for-pixel identical to the original. AdvanceCOMP is open source, and uses the 7-Zip implementation of the DEFLATE algorithm to achieve superior compression. LobStoR (talk) 15:13, 14 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Psira

edit

Certainly, you had a reason to zoom in and cut the image File:Psira island.jpg. However, I prefer the old version and maybe others also do. So, if you want to apply significant changes to the appearance of an image, e.g. the dimension of the picture, I would appreciate if you'd use a new file name. Btw: The cropping was not lossless, as the coast line can't be seen anymore, which could serve as a kind of scale in order to guess the dimension of the island. Please, restore the old version. Thank you. --84.176.131.91 23:11, 25 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I am fine with reverting it to the full version. If you are looking for someone to "blame" -- my edit was simply repairing the "damage" done by User:Greece11's messy crop. I personally believe that derivative works (such as a crop) should be uploaded under a new filename. LobStoR (talk) 18:03, 27 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

edit

File:Nasa Solar Eclipse July 11, 2010.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
