It’s usually cooler outside on the shady side of my house and after sunset on all sides than it is inside my house. Hasn’t anyone developed a simple central ducting system switch to allow the airflow to optionally be exhausts totally into the attic. That way I could turn on just my existing central fan to draw cooler air from open windows and I’d be cooling the house and the attic. Seems this would be a simple attic ductwork Y switching arrangement.

Wow. Just wow. The DIY scenario you describe above is even worse than the one I hypothesized last night for your Facebook post. And, as someone pointed out in that post, the support for that PVC waste pipe was lacking, at best. No wonder the joint failed.

I guess it did not occur to this DIY homeowner that, even if the sewer line was perfectly intact and no other problems existed in that crawl space, what was supposed to happen once all of the crawl space cooled air was drawn out and delivered to the bonus room, if no air from the bonus room was returned to the crawl space?

Even if that was planned for, your case is well made that crawl spaces should not be sucked or blown on for HVAC air paths. Dead possums or frequently replenished pools of effluent = no way!!

That’s definitely a concern,
That’s definitely a concern, Harvey. Marc Rosenbaum reported on elevated levels in a passive house last year at the PHIUS conference. The cause, as I recall, was an unbalanced ERV that put the basement under negative pressure.

Why wait for someone to fart when we can smell it almost all the time ? Farts are still funny right ?

I worry about enhanced radon introduction from depressurized crawl spaces like this one, where radon is a potential issue. Even in crawl spaces we think have been sealed.
