Se tienen dos cuerpos masivos uno mayor (M1) y otro menor (M2) orbitando. La Esfera de Roche o de Hill es una esfera gravitacional alrededor de M2 en donde ocurre la atracción de cuerpos menores (M3) para luego quedar en órbita del M2, es decir ser satélites. El cuerpo menor M2 tiene una esfera gravitacional que tiene como diámetro (eje elipsoide) desde el punto de Lagrange 1 (L1) hasta el punto de Lagrange 2 (L2). Es allí, entonces, donde un tercer cuerpo (M3) atraído por M2 puede quedar orbitando como satélite. Por ejemplo, la Luna se encuentra dentro de la esfera de Hill terrestre que tiene un radio (centro la Tierra) de 1,5 millones de kilómetros. Por ende, todo cuerpo masivo o no en el espacio tendrá su esfera de Hill, ej. estrellas, planetas, satélites, asteroides y cometas. Fuente Wikipedia: Esfera de Hill |
